Blood Omen is an old and forgotten game, which came out pretty early in the PSX's lifetime. As it was quite a mature title not many got to play it. But now there should be no excuse. Here's why:
You play as Kain, a nobleman who gets brutalized in the first minute of the game and enters a pact with a necromancer to get his revenge on his murderers without paying much thought to the cost. Soon he realizes that nothing is free and after becoming a vampire seeks to find a cure for himself and, potentially, the world.
The game is as good an old-school Zelda clone as you're likely to get, and definitely one of the (if not THE) best. You have your assortment of weapons like swords, axes and maces. Armours like the Bone Armour (which makes lesser undead ignore you) and many different spells and artifacts (think of these as the items in Zelda) which help you in all kinds of ways from brutally and creatively slaughtering your enemies or helping you go through the trials that await you.
Throughout the game you'll visit a variety of gothic locales, full of enemies to kill and traps to avoid. Kain, being a Vampire, can suck the lifeblood of his living foes to replenish his own and also transform into all forms of vampire literature such as Mist, Bat, Wolf and 'Disguise', the last one meaning you can take the form of a normal human being.
The graphics, being pre-rendered 2D, still hold up quite well, the controls are responsive and the sound design, from the music to the excellent voice overs (which actually makes many recent games seem..lacking in comparison) the game is great.
If you're wondering why I knocked one point off from the score, it's because of the load times (even when you open the menus!) which are lessened if you have a fast PC, and lastly the collision detection between Kain and the enemies which sometimes is seemingly 'off'.
Despite all these, this game is a gem. Play it, if you like these kinds o games and you'llbe in for an unforgettable experience.

A top-down change of pace from the usual crop of action games.
Blood Omen is marketed as an “epic role-playing game,” but don’t expect an experience similar to Ultima, Might and Magic, or even Diablo. Blood Omen was originally released on the PlayStation and uses the term “role-playing” in the console way, meaning it’s an action adventure.
As the game begins, we learn that the title character, Kain, was a young nobleman murdered during his travels, and is resurrected as a vampire and is sent on a blood-curling quest for revenge.
Though it is firmly grounded as a kill-or-be killed action game, Blood Omen’s biggest assets are its sheer size and variety. Along the way, Kain will meet and beat 170 different creatures and bosses, and uncover a variety of weapons, armor, and spells. As a bonus, Kain can morph into different forms, each possessing different abilities. He can change into a wolf, bat, mist, and can disguise himself as a human in order to move among mortals undetected.
My complaints with Blood Omen are relatively minor — the camera could have been smoother and less nauseating, and the graphics are a bit fuzzy. The darkness helps set the mood, but I would think any self-respecting nosferatu should be able to see in the dark.
Overall, Blood Omen has made a nice transition to the PC. It includes support for up to 10-button joysticks and gamepads as well as mouse support for menus, which is often lacking in console ports. However, the game’s console origins reveal a few rough edges that can detract from the fun. First, is the artificial intelligence for the creatures you’ll encounter. Many creatures simply move back and forth between two points, oblivious to their surroundings. These grievances aside, Blood Omen is an enjoyable experience that gives PC owners a chance to savor console-style role-playing and an interesting story with little hassle.
